If Sheila Kindellan-Sheehan is new to you, as she was to me, take a moment to consider adding her work to your bookshelf. Kindellan-Sheehan has written eight novels, the most recent of which were published by Montréal’s Véhicule Press.

People who enjoy a well-written, cleverly plotted mystery will appreciate this tale about the discovery of a dead university student in Montréal’s long-abandoned Wellington Tunnel.

Kindellan-Sheehan creates believable characters, some of whom you will like and others who you certainly will not. Even her most infuriating, unlikable characters, though, will keep you reading. The picture she offers of an apparently intact family whose lives are actually unravelling in a way that seems unstoppable could well inspire readers to put their lives on hold until they read the last word.

The pacing of the story is excellent, tautly plotted and vibrating with many kinds of tension. If you know Montréal, you will recognize it here. If you don’t, perhaps the book will inspire you to visit. Either way, time immersed in this novel is time well spent.
