Review by Simon C. Thalheim

On the eve of Canada’s 150th birthday, journalist and researcher Arthur Milnes sets the stage with Canada Always: The Defining Speeches of Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Milnes, a speechwriter for former prime minister  Stephen Harper, commemorates the work of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Canada’s seventh prime minister , by collecting many of his iconic speeches, from the early years of his political career in the 1860s until his death in 1919.

Retrieving the most important speeches of Laurier’s long political career is an ambitious project. Collecting commentaries from seven former prime ministers (Turner, Mulroney, Martin, Clark, Campbell, Chrétien and  ) and seven other honourables (recently retired Supreme Court justice  Thomas Cromwell, former Québec premier Jean Charest, former Ontario premier Bob Rae, British Columbia Premier Christy Clark, former Alberta premier Roy Romanow, former senator Lowell Murray and former British prime minister Tony Blair) is another.

Milnes’ book provides a look back at the foundations of Canada. The book contains Laurier’s “Sunny Ways” speech, delivered on Oct. 8, 1895, in Morrisburg, Ont., and made famous again by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during his own victory speech after the October 2015 election.

This anthology is complete and definitely a must-read for any political enthusiast.
