Review by Lorie Pierce

This picture book tackles the topic of dawdling, showing moment-to-moment action, or inaction, in one family’s day. Written by Jennifer Lanthier, award-winning journalist and author of popular children’s books The Stamp Collector and The Mystery of the Martello Tower, and illustrated by artist Isabelle Malenfant, this book is designed for children from ages 3 to 7.

Malenfant’s beautiful pastel illustrations portray Henry as he trails behind his family and friends. In a test of what makes a great picture book, several pages carry the story through illustrations alone, without need for text.

The characters include people from several generations and ethnic backgrounds, making the community depicted seem modern and realistic.

The story focuses on the willingness of Henry’s friends and family to accommodate differences. Is it a bad thing to be tardy? Is it something Henry does on purpose? Young readers will see Henry doing many activities they can relate to: playing with Legos, blowing bubbles and spending time with his grandmother.

This is a good book for reading aloud, and it’s easy to imagine young listeners joining in when the main character’s family says, “Hurry up, Henry!”
