Review by Janice Minter

This book is written in a wonderful rhyme by Alisia Dale, who grew up in Châteauguay, QC, and illustrated throughout with dynamic pencil and watercolour drawings by Sheree Evelina. It will delight children and parents alike.

The story takes place in Châteauguay itself, where we are introduced to some of its  landmarks, its streets (named after famous composers) and its inhabitants in renderings that suggest both peacefulness and spirited activity. Only a few well-chosen details are needed to bring us right to Sela Blue’s doorstep.

Many of us remember the sense of anticipation and excitement of our “ever-first school day,” and this is what Dale and Evelina capture so perfectly for a new generation. Children will enjoy picking out all the colourful, witty little details, and may recognize their own questions in those a nervous Sela asks her parents about her first day at Mary Gardner Elementary School.

The story is a musical one too, using sound (or the suggestion of it) to propel the story forward and add even more depth. Acknowledging very real first-day jitters takes nothing away from the brightness of this story. I look forward to the rest of the series.
